Vodafone bought Connex...

Vodafone today announces that its wholly-owned subsidiary Vodafone International Holdings B.V. has entered into agreements with Telesystem International Wireless Inc. ("TIW") of Canada to acquire approximately:

* 79% of the share capital of MobiFon S.A. ("MobiFon") in Romania. This will increase Vodafone and its subsidiaries' ("Vodafone Group") ownership in MobiFon to approximately 99%; and,
* 100% of the share capital of Oskar Mobil a.s. ("Oskar") in the Czech Republic

for a cash consideration of approximately US$3.5 billion (1.8 billion pounds Sterling) to be satisfied from Vodafone Group's cash resources. In addition, Vodafone Group will be assuming approximately US$0.9 billion (0.5 billion pounds) of net debt.

Commenting on the acquisitions, Arun Sarin, Chief Executive of Vodafone, said:

"I am delighted that MobiFon and Oskar, both fast growing mobile operators, will become part of Vodafone, where they will benefit fully from the global services and scale benefits that our group can deliver. These acquisitions will create value for our shareholders and will be good for our customers. They are also consistent with our stated strategy of increasing investment in Central and Eastern Europe."

I am curious if the recent Rebranding of Connex was made with the clear thought that ‘Connex is going to be sold this year’

I sincerely recommend you this post made by a good friend of mine, a future romanian branding guru, Andrei Iordache, on his blog

Here you can read some of my comments about the Connex Rebranding…just a few weeks before.

So, finally Vodafone bought Connex...
And I sure hope that this acquisition will change some things in the Connex offer and services.

What do you think… Vodafone will keep the Connex brand as it is, they will improve and refresh it or they will actually change it?!

The average Romanian, the 'average un-informed connex client', will know that Vodafone bought Mobifon and the Connex brand from TIW or not? There will be a big scale 'communication campaign' or not?

Should we expect some promotional services and offers?

I am so sure that more than half of the Connex clients didn’t understand exactly the difference between Connex and Mobifon and had no idea that Mobifon is owned by TIW...
What changes should we expect now?

Is the new 'Connex Green going' to be replaced with the world recognized Vodafone red?

What will be Orange's answer?

And what about the Management? Will Ted remain the 'main man' or Vodafone will send in Bucharest a new 'boss'? Anyway, Congrats Ted!

The principal benefits to Vodafone Group are:

* Expansion of its controlled footprint into two attractive European markets
- adjacent to existing Vodafone Group markets
- combined population of around 32 million
- strong growth economies

* Control of MobiFon, a leading operator in Romania
- mobile penetration of approximately 47%
- 4.9 million customers, equivalent to 48% market share
- revenues of US$723 million, delivering 30% growth year-on-year
- EBITDA of US$345 million with 48% EBITDA margin

* Control of Oskar, the fastest growing operator in the Czech Republic
- 1.8 million customers, equivalent to 17% market share
- market leading ARPUs (US$25) resulting in revenue share of around 20%
- revenues of US$552 million, delivering 35% growth year-on-year
- EBITDA of US$162 million with 29% EBITDA margin

* Additional value to be created from operational enhancements, through the integration of MobiFon and Oskar into the Vodafone Group and participation in the One Vodafone programme including:
- global procurement and the deployment of Vodafone products and services
- network design and planning, shared service platforms, supply chain management and roaming

The Last paragraph tells us that VODAFONE will make it's presence known on the market.

There will be a fantastic fight between the GIANTS - Vodafone and Orange...and I hope that we, the clients will benefit the most from their 'duel'...

Did you know that Vodafone is fighting Telemobil (the ZAPP - CDMA operators in Romania)for the VODAFONE brand rights?

Telemobil registred the Vodafone brand in Romania 10 or 12 years ago....when Vodafone wasn't the giant that is today...

So...Connex can not operate as VODAFONE until the court gives them the right tu use the brand.

It seems that it is just a matter of time...and Vodafone will be able to use it's brand name in Romania.

Their main argument in court is that Telemobil did not use their registred Vodafone brand. The Telemobil representants claim that they sold some audio kits marked with the Vodafone brand - from 'Voice/Data/Fonie'...

We'll see what the future bring us...

The future sounds good and seems bright for us the clients!

Vodafone paid 3.5 billions Dollars + 0,9 billion Dollars = 4,4 billions $ for both CONNEX and OSKAR…

I wonder what’s the REAL CONNEX MARKET VALUE?!

Vodafone bought 79% stakes from Mobifon, because they already owned 20%... If these 79% could be around 2-2.5 Billions $ it means that the MARKET VALUE of CONNEX is at least 2,5 if not 3 billions Dollars.

Impressive, ha? ;-)
Connex has around 5 millions customers so, each CONNEX user value around 600$...
